Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art and combat sport system that focuses primarily on grappling and ground fighting. BJJ promotes the concept that a smaller, weaker person can defend themselves against a larger, stronger, or heavier opponent by using precise technique, timing, and leverage. Most notably, taking the fight to the ground, then applying joint manipulation and chokes to defeat the assailant. BJJ training can be used for sport grappling tournaments. While BJJ was designed as a self defense art, it also has a large and growing sport-based competition-driven community. Sparring (what most in the BJJ community refer to as “rolling”) and live drilling play a major role in training; however, BJJ is for anyone looking to improve their bodily awareness, problem solving abilities, and physical fitness.
